Home Sweet Home

On Monday morning a doctor was actually going to stop by Mauri’s room to give him the good news that he was going to be able to go home.  Of course, just as he was going to get there, as usual, he was called in for an emergency operation.  The nurse, though, let Mauri know ahead of time what to expect.  So, I went to the hospital prepared to get all of his things together, and soon after I arrived, the doctor did come to let Mauri know he could go home.
He gave Mauri the paperwork explaining what had been done so far, and what could be expected, and also gave him three prescriptions for medications.  The doctor also told us to make an appointment for a month from now, in which the doctors will take x-rays of Mauri’s pelvis to see how it’s progressing.  The doctor admitted that he didn’t think it was likely that the bone will regenerate on its own, but that it is in an area which is rich in blood vessels, so it is a possibility.  If it doesn’t, though, he said that the surgery that would need to be done is quite extensive and difficult, so he’d like to try to avoid it.  The affected area can’t be accessed easily, so they would need to cut a lot just to get to where they needed to be to graft bone into the site.  After answering our questions, the doctor left, and we started to get our things together, ready to leave.
Right when we were about to go, though, Mauri realized that the prescriptions that we had been given were in somebody else’s name.  The prescriptions, though, were right.  Had he not said anything, we would have gone to a pharmacy, had them filled, and nothing else would have happened.  He decided to show them the error, though, to try to fix it.
By that point, it was almost 1PM, and the doctor (surprise, surprise) had been called into surgery.  As it seems there are no other doctors in the entire hospital, nobody else was able to fill it for us, and we were told to wait until 3PM (“at the latest”), when the doctor would be done, and could fix the error.
Frustrating as it was to have to stay any longer than necessary at the hospital, we waited…
…And waited…
…And waited….
…Until it was almost 4PM, when the nurses started making their rounds.
We asked about the doctor, and were told that he had two people waiting for him to operate on them, and that we should understand that that is a lot more important than what we needed.  So, we told them we were leaving, and the nurse tried to argue with us to stay.  I answered that we had waited all day Thursday for a doctor to come by, as promised, but none ever did.  I didn’t want to waste another day waiting around for a doctor to write a prescription that he might not ever write.
As luck would have it, I had most of the meds already at home from after my prolonged hospital stay.  The only thing we didn’t already have was a pain medication that was prescribed just in case Mauri has more pain than what could be relieved with acetaminophen.  He doesn’t think that he will need it.
So, we just need a prescription for a medication that keeps blood from clotting when you are in bed for prolonged periods for the rest of the month, once we finish the ones I had leftover.  Luckily a friend of a friend heard our story, and offered to fill it for us.  So, when I get a chance, I’ll go down to Denia to get that done.
So, for now, it is mostly a waiting game.  Mauri was upset that the doctor said that the surgery would be difficult if he needs it, so he is now concentrating on trying to grow some bone.  J
As for Eric, he is happy to be able to follow his papi around when papi uses his crutches to move around the house.  He missed not seeing him at home.
Eric has also grown quite fond of trying to eat Sheena and Molly’s food.  I’ve had to pull pieces of dog food out of his mouth on several occasions now.  Even when I hide the bowl out of his reach, he manages to find the pieces that messy Sheena brings all over when she walks as she eats.  Oh, if only they had normal Cheerios here. Maybe then Eric would prefer those to doggie O’s!!
