When it Rains, it Pours

This morning when I was getting Eric ready so that we could go visit Mauri, I noticed that he had some raised, red bumps on the back of his thighs.  I decided to try to ignore it at the time, and wait to see if it got better because I figured that I was going to the hospital anyways, and I could always make a short trip to the ER later on.  So, Eric and I headed to the hospital and arrived just in time for the daily visit from the trauma doctor.  By the time we arrived, Mauri had already gotten his CAT scan.
The doctor told us that Mauri was missing a large piece of bone in the part of the pelvis where the leg bone fits into it.  It doesn't seem to affect the articulation for movement, but is in a place that would likely affect the articulation when Mauri stands.  The ball part of the joint would put pressure on that part of the socket.  Being such a large piece missing, it isn't likely that it will regenerate on it's own, and Mauri will likely need a graft of bone from another part of his body.  For now, with it being an open fracture, meaning that the skin has an open wound, they can only wait and observe the wound because there is too much of a risk of infection to do anything else right now.  So, for now, we can only wait here for the next few days and see how the wound evolves.  They will then check on the bone and decide if he will need more surgery.
After being in the room for awhile, I noticed that Eric started to have tiny dark red spots pop up in other places on his body, so I decided to take him down to the ER.  After a bit of a wait, a doctor called us in and said that the tiny spots look like what could be chicken pox, but it's too early in the evolution of whatever it is to know for sure.  What seemed strange to him were the other red spots behind his leg that don't look anything like chicken pox.
He told me to bring Eric to his doctor in the next 24-48 hours, and that she might be able to make a better diagnosis after things evolve a little more.  He gave me a prescription for acetaminophen, just in case we need it, but luckily for now Eric seems to be OK, and doesn't have a fever.  Hopefully we won't need it.
So, just like yesterday, things could be better, but they could also be worse.
